A long time customer of mine wanted to make over their backyard for a graduation party. We worked with a landscaping contractor to regrade the backyard, install a blue stone patio and walkways, some new plantings and of course, build a cedar Pergola. If I remember correctly, technically a Pergola connects a house to an auxiliary structure, and what is pictured above is an arbor. Everyone calls this kind of free standing backyard feature a Pergola, so we'll just go with that. This is built out of cedar and stained with a clear oil stain.
